Wide Fit Shoes Guide

Deep fitting shoes are a practical and stylish option for people who need to wear orthotics to treat any number of foot ailments. They are also helpful for older people who want to preserve their good health by making sure they look after their feet.

When you think about it, your feet really take a pounding during your lifetime. If you have a moderately active activity level and live to age 80, you can expect to take just over 2 billion steps during your lifetime. This is the equivalent of walking approximately 110,000 miles. To put this figure into perspective, it is the equivalent of walking around the Earth five times if you could encircle the Equator.

With all that punishment your feet take, it is imperative that you put them in footwear that is going to protect them from any sources of discomfort. Deep fitting shoes can help to keep your feet feeling comfortable, no matter what the specific nature of your footwear needs happen to be.

Orthotics are shoe inserts that are worn to restore the natural position of your foot. They can be bought over the counter or made especially for you.

If your podiatrist has recommended that you wear an orthotic device in your shoe, you are meant to remove it and reposition it when you change shoes. These devices can be easily switched from one set of footwear to another.

When shopping for shoes for orthotics, consider deep fitting shoes. They will have a well built-up heel counter (back of the shoe) that will be stiff enough to provide support for an orthotic device, such as a heel wedge, heel flare or an extended heel.

In order to fit your orthotic into the shoe properly, look for a pair that has an insole which can be removed easily. This will give you even more room in which to place a padded arch support or a padding to protect your toes if you are being treated for bunions, hammer toes or ingrown toenails. A deep fitting shoe will make it less likely that your toes are being pinched or that the vamp (the shoe’s upper) will rub against them, causing irritation.

Your podiatrist may recommend that you wear an orthotic that is meant to support your ankle and foot. These types of orthotics, known as AFOs (ankle-foot orthotics) provide direct support to the ankle joint and control its motion. Depending on their purpose, they may have an adjustable ankle hinge or rigid to keep the foot from turning inward or outward.

Shoes for Older Adults

It’s very important to take good care of your feet as you get older. If you have a history of wearing high heels or pointed-toe shoes, your feet will be more likely to develop foot issues over time. These will become more noticeable with age, and it makes sense to buy shoes that feel comfortable.

A number of older adults are willing to make the (foot pain) sacrifice and wear shoes that pinch and hurt in order to have footwear that looks stylish and to avoid having to wear shoes that make them feel, “old.” You don’t have to settle for orthopaedic shoes once you reach a certain age in order to avoid foot issues.

Comfortable shoes should have enough room in the toe box so that your toes are not cramped or pinched while you are wearing them. This guideline applies to formal shoes, trainers, walking boots, golf shoes, canvas shoes, sandals, wedding shoes, etc.

You may notice that your feet may become swollen through the day or even change shape if you develop foot difficulties. Choosing deep fitting shoes that can be adjusted through the use of lace-ups, straps, buckles or elastic fastenings make it easy and convenient for you to continue wearing your shoes in comfort.

You don’t want the condition of your feet to dictate whether you can continue to have an active lifestyle. Simply adjust your shoes as necessary and continue on with your regular activities to the extent that you want to; don’t let the lack of comfortable shoes hold you back from doing what you want to.

Wide Fit Shoes carries a number of styles that are roomy enough to accommodate a prosthetic device if you happen to need one, are adjustable and have a roomy toe box so that they will not pinch your toes.
